Saving paper: Is Twitter the new business card?
Imagine meeting an interesting contact, and instead of the typical Rolodex clutter, or stacks of business cards rubber-banded together, you simply pull out your phone and follow them on Twitter.
However, there are a few qualms that come to my mind.
The main problems that ZDNet author Jennifer Leggio points out are:
- forgetting the person’s name you are following
- not remembering why you are even following them to begin with
- not being able to enter details regarding how/why you met and the importance behind the social connection
So, even though the convenience is evident, does simply adding someone on Twitter end up making your social networking more impersonal than if you had gotten their card?
What Leggio proposes is to create some sort of add-on service that will allow for people to subscribe to a Twitter contact database.
This way, the best of both worlds could come about: lack of business card clutter, while maintaining personal connectivity with new contacts.
Overall, the important thing to remember is that regardless of how you meet new clients or connections, you must follow up: whether it be virtually, or face-to-face.
